The Big Beanie Party: Celebrating 15 years of the Alice Springs Beanie Festival

The doors open to 'Earth Wind, Fire and Water', the 2011 exhibition. Tthe collectors in a viewing frenzy.
Yamba greets a mob of fans. The kids lead the dancing. Queues form for gourmet food. Every one has donned their finest woolly regalia, making crowd watching a joy.

This is where the mayhem and the thrill of the beanie chase takes place with thousands of beanies on display and for sale. Beanies, baskets, indigenous spinning, free crochet workshops, cake opportunities, bbq. Oh yes there's plenty of beanies.
Special Events in the Festival Arena Free Workshops 
Learn to crochet your own beanie (wool and hooks on sale)
Saturday 25 June & Sunday 26 June 2011, 2pm.
Out the front of the Araluen Galleries.

Demonstrations
Enjoy free demonstrations of traditional Anangu spinning
and other Aboriginal textiles. Araluen Foyer and outside. 
Purple House A special treat enjoy tasting some kangaroo tail and bush damper cooked on the open fire by the Anangu ladies, and try some real bush medicine.
Bush Medicines Akeyulerre Traditional Medicines made by local Arrernte elder women using traditional methods. Sit with local Arrernte women and learn how to make these traditional medicines or purchase some to take home and use for your ailments.
     
Drop –In Textile Workshops Join in and learn a new technique.
Needle felting, wet felting, crochet, knitting, weaving. 
Cost $10-$15 with materials
Workshops run Saturday, Sunday, Monday 10am-5pm. Araluen Foyer
Children’s Activities  Free activities for children of all ages to learn to explore yarns through traditional techniques, out back of Beanie Central.
Basket weaving with the Tjanpi Indigenous Women  Learn to weave a basket with the Indigenous Tjanpi Basket Weavers.

Yarrenyty Arltere Artists  This Western Arrernte Arts Enterprise is based at the Larapinta Valley Town Camp in Alice Springs. Initially established as a training program to help people rebuild lives, it now operates as a small but dynamic arts enterprise. Producing beautiful soft sculptures and etchings, the Larapinta Town Camp invite you to two important events:
Friday 17 June 6pm Yarrenyty Arltere opens “Faces of Larapinta”  Exhibiting a collection of soft sculpture dolls and prints that speak of the healing nature of this art enterprise. 
Where: Araluen Arts Centre
Wednesday 22 June 4pm- 7.30pm Yarrenyty Arltere Open Night unique evening of art, films and food. Celebrating a community that is working towards a better future. Soft sculptures, prints, naturally dyed silk scarves and hand printed cards for sale, films made by the town camp residents and a BBQ, kangaroo tails and damper for sale. Please come and support this important event at Larapinta Town Camp.

Volunteering  

Calling Volunteers The Beanie Festival needs assistance! The festival is a community event and needs volunteers. Come along and get involved. It's a lot of fun. Put your name on the roster at the Volunteer Station, Witchettys Araluen, anytime from 11am Wednesday June 25th, plenty of jobs and times to choose from.
